  • Transportation: Myrdal - Oslo (Train Ticket)
  • Accommodation: Amerikalinjen
  • Meals: B

The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) winds its way from Myrdal to Flåm, 865 meters below, nestled in the innermost corner of the Aurlandfjord. Each year, this exciting stretch of railway attracts people from all corners of the world, making the Flåm Railway one of Norway's major and most spectacular tourist attractions! In their March 2014 issue, Lonely Planet Traveler included the Flåm Railway in a list of "The World's most incredible train journeys 2014" and named it "The world's best train ride". The train journey provides some of Norway's wildest and most magnificent scenery.

Depart Flåm: 12:10 PM
Arrival Myrdal: 1:08 PM

On the 20-kilometre long train ride you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls cascade down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains and mountain farms that cling dizzily to sheer slopes. The Flåm Railway is one of the world's steepest railway lines on normal gauge. The gradient is 55/1000 on almost 80% of the line. The twisting tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain are manifestations of the most daring and skillful engineering in Norwegian railway history. At the foot of the mountains you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Flåm Valley and admire the majestic Aurlandfjord, a branch of Norway's longest fjord, the Sognefjord. A trip on the Flåm Railway is just as stunning in winter as in summer and it takes about one hour between the stations of Myrdal and Flåm. You can travel the Flåmsbana one-way in both directions or take a round trip.

From Myrdal you will travel with the Bergen Railway to Oslo. The 5-hour journey on the Bergen railway is classed as one of the finest train journeys in the world; it connects the two largest cities in Norway and shows the diversity of the Norwegian landscape.

Depart Myrdal: 1:52 PM
Arrive Oslo: 7:05 PM

Oslo

Oslo’s on the move. With the recently opened MUNCH Museum, Deichmann Library and National Museum, Norway’s capital has become a rich cultural hub. These new additions to the skyline are an architecture lover’s dream, and they fit perfectly between the Opera House and the Barcode. Nature is never far away in Oslo, and you can get to a quaint forest lake or the famous ski jump Holmenkollen in less than 20 minutes on the metro from the city centre. The city is built around the Oslofjord, so it’s easy to visit one of the charming islands. Then there’s the food! With award-winning restaurants and coffee shops seemingly around every corner, Oslo is fast becoming one of Europe’s most tastebud tantalizing destinations.

Day 8: Oslo

Oslo

10 AM: Oslo Highlights

As Norway’s capital has a near car-free center, the best way to experience Oslo tours is by bike! On this 3-hour tour, you’ll cover more ground on two wheels compared to walking and get a complete picture of Norway’s capital. You’ll learn about Norwegian culture, topics such as the social system, urban development, food culture, Norwegian politics and society, and the modern development of Oslo. This is not a one-size-fits-all tour- we shape the itinerary to fit your interests. In winter, tours have a special kind of magic and require a touch of Viking courage from the guests! Cycling with studded tires (like ours) is safer than walking as you have more grip. (This service is on a private basis.)
