Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco and second largest city in Mexico, and the 10th largest city in Latin America. Known as the land of tequila and mariachi (both were born here), it is rich in history and tradition. Conversely, it is also known as the Mexican Silicon Valley as the main producer of technology and software in Mexico. Boasting dazzling colonial architecture and old world charm, as well as a year-round, mild mountain climate and several cultural treasures such as Latin America's largest indoor market, and the world's largest Spanish language book fair, Guadalajara is a gem and a must-see.
This morning, you will meet your guide at 9:00 AM and begin your day of exploring with Guadalajara's Centro Historico. On the way, observe the large boulevards lined with monuments and fountains to get a feel for the city. On arrival, you'll visit City Hall with it's mural depicting the Spanish conquest of Mexico, the 16th century cathedral, and the Governor's Palace. Built in the 18th century, the palace boasts murals by Mexico's famous artist, Jose Clemente Orozco. Next, you'll visit the Rotonda de las Personas Ilustres. Built in 1952, the 17 pillars of this monument pay tribute to the history of Jalisco and house the remains of the city's important historical figures. Continue on to the Hospicio Cabanas. Built in the 19th century to provide care and shelter for the disadvantaged, it's architecture and grand murals are impressive to say the least. Finally, visit the Degollado theater - the city's opera house, and admire it's gold walls and interior mosaic design.
Having explored this colonial city you will continue on to Tlaquepaque, about 30 minutes away. Here, you'll have free time to explore the town and shop for local handicrafts. The pedestrian shopping area, lined with 17th and 18th century houses offers many shops, museums, galleries and restaurants. Local goods include ceramics, blown glass, cut crystal, papier mache, leather goods, embroidered purses and clothing, and hand made jewelry. Take the opportunity to stroll over to the main plaza, El Parian, where the mariachi bands play for tips as people eat and drink.
After a full day of exploration, you'll be returned to Guadalajara to enjoy the remainder of the day free at your leisure. (This service is on a private basis.)

Located in Jalisco, Tequila is one of Mexico's "Pueblo Magicos" or Magic Towns. Best known as the birthplace of the drink that bears its name, the blue agave plant is native to this area.
