Exploring Jordan is a unique experience, sure to fulfill the wanderlust of any traveler. Jordan is an enchanting oasis where a warm, welcoming culture waits for your arrival. The ancient site of Petra may be the reason you travel here in the first place - a lost city rivaling Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat in dramatic beauty - but there are plenty of reasons to stay a bit longer. After all, Jordan has played host to Roman Empires, biblical stories, and European crusades. You can be sure history can be found under every rock and in every crevasse.
Welcome to Jordan! Upon arrival at the Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by a local representative. He/she will be holding an orange sign with your name on it and will assist you through visa formalities. Once you have gathered all of your luggage, you will be transferred directly to your Dead Sea accommodations. (This service is on a private basis.)
The Dead Sea – bordering Israel, the West Bank and Jordan – is a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously vibrant blue and hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts. The extreme salinity of the water comes from the high evaporation rate. This salinity makes for an almost intolerable environment most living organisms.
Today you will head to the Mujib Nature Reserve for a guided 3.5-hour hike along the Siq Trail. Walk in water through the deep sandstone gorge of Wadi Mujib and experience Jordan's most famous river canyon! Life jackets are provided, but you'll need to rent or bring a dry bag if you want to bring along your phone, camera or other valuables as there are sections where you will need to swim. Otherwise, it is best to leave them in a locker at the visitor center. You can also rent water shoes here. The trail starts at the visitor center near the Mujib Bridge, where you will take the cantilevered walkway over the dam and follow the course of the river between towering sandstone cliffs to the base of a large waterfall. Depending on seasonal rainfall levels, the gorge may contain pools deep enough for swimming.
Once you have made it back to the visitors' center, you will be transferred to Bethany for an afternoon exploration. Situated in a pristine natural environment, the site is believed to be the location where Jesus of Nazareth was baptized by John the Baptist. It features Roman and Byzantine remains, including churches and chapels, a monastery, caves that have been used by hermits and pools in which baptisms were celebrated, testifying to the religious character of the place. The site is a Christian place of pilgrimage. (This service is on a private basis.)
Once you have checked out of your hotel, you will be picked up and transferred to the city of Kerak.
Here you will have the opportunity to visit the Crusader's Castle, with its diverse history dated from the Byzantine to the Mamluk period, and get to know the architectural military brilliance of the Crusaders. (This service is on a private basis.)
From Kerak, you will head to the Dana Nature Reserve. Apart from its wildlife, the reserve is rich with archaeological sites and local culture. While at the reserve, you will embark on a two-hour guided hiking tour. You are starting from the al-Barra area heading to the beautiful springs and ancient ruins in the Nawatef area. Travel through valleys, and traverse rocky landscapes to see a Nabatean settlement. The natural beauty of the Nawatef area, the Nabatean settlement, and the contrasting landscapes ensure there is something on this hike that will appeal to everyone. After your hike, you will be transferred to Petra for an evening at leisure. (This service is on a private basis.)
After breakfast, you will embark on an exploration of Petra, aptly described as the "rose-red city, half as old as time." The ancient city was founded by the Nabateans 2000 years ago. Its massive architectural structure and its multicolored stones are an incredible attraction. The visit of the ancient Nabatean capital starts on horseback, followed by a walk through the Siq, a long narrow fissure between two overhanging cliffs. Towards the end of the Siq, you will be spellbound by Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury. The tour then proceeds to unfold the mysteries of the city gradually.
The horse ride fees in Petra is for 800 meters, it is included in the entry ticket whether you should choose to take it or not. This ride is not insured and is upon the guest's responsibility, and please note that the horse handler will expect a tip. Local guides are assigned at the visitor's center of the site; they are employees of the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism, and tour companies cannot guarantee the quality of their services. (This service is on a private basis.)
Tonight you can enjoy a cooking class and meal at the Petra Kitchen. The Petra Kitchen has a relaxed, informal atmosphere where you'll prepare an evening meal, working alongside local women under the supervision of a chef. (This service is on a group basis.)
Today you will be provided entry to explore Petra further. Visiting Petra is a journey through a lost city of ancient history, staggering architecture, and unparalleled charm. Petra is not a trip to rush. It is a place to linger, take a deep breath, and even meditate. Two thousand years back in time is what you will expect in "The Red Rose City "; Carved directly into a vibrant red, white, pink, and sandstone cliff faces — lost to the Western World from about the 14th century until the early 19th century.
