As Middle Eastern cities go, Amman is a relative youth, being mostly a creation of the 20th century. But though it lacks the storied history and thrilling architectural tapestry of other regional capitals, there’s plenty here to encourage you to linger awhile before making for Petra, the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum. In fact, Amman is one of the easiest cities in which to enjoy the Middle East experience.
Today, you will embark on an exploration of Petra, aptly described as the "rose-red city, half as old as time." The ancient city was founded by the Nabateans 2000 years ago. Its massive architectural structure and its multicolored stones are an incredible attraction. The visit of the ancient Nabatean capital starts on horseback, followed by a walk through the Siq, a long narrow fissure between two overhanging cliffs. Towards the end of the Siq, you will be spellbound by Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury. The tour then proceeds to unfold the mysteries of the city gradually.
The horse ride fees in Petra is for 800 meters, it is included in the entry ticket whether you should choose to take it or not. This ride is not insured and is upon the guest's responsibility, and please note that the horse handler will expect a tip. Local guides are assigned at the visitor's center of the site; they are employees of the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism, and tour companies cannot guarantee the quality of their services. Tonight you can enjoy a cooking class and meal at the Petra Kitchen. The Petra Kitchen has a relaxed, informal atmosphere where you'll prepare an evening meal, working alongside local women under the supervision of a chef. (This service is on a private basis.)
Visiting Petra is a journey through a lost city of ancient history, staggering architecture, and unparalleled charm. Petra is not a trip to rush, it is a place to linger, take a deep breath, and even meditate. 2000 Years back in time is what you will expect in "The Red Rose City "; Carved directly into a vibrant red, white, pink, and sandstone cliff faces. Lost to the Western World from about the 14th century until the early 19th century.
Following breakfast, today, you will visit the Christian Town of Madaba, which is known as ‘The City of Mosaics.’ You will be attending the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where you will see the masterpiece of Madaba (a Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land that goes back to the 6th century, showing Jerusalem and other cities), you will also visit the Archaeological Park, which houses the remains of several Byzantine churches, including the amazing mosaics of the Church of the Virgin. The park complex includes a school for the restoration and conservation of ancient mosaics.
You will then go to Mt. Nebo, which is considered to be one of the most important holy sites in Jordan, as it is believed to be the place where Moses climbed from the Valley of Moab, and from where God showed him the Promised Land, as well as Moses’ last resting place. It features ruins from the 4th to the 6th century with marvelous mosaics adorning the grounds of the church still visible. Continue to the Dead Sea, where you will spend the next two nights. (This service is on a private basis.)
Enjoy the morning to fully relax and enjoy the captivating waters of the Dead Sea!
Today you will transfer to the Wadi Mujib Reserve for a 3-4 hour trail hike inside of the reserve Siq trail. It starts at the visitor center near the Mujib Bridge, from where you take the cantilevered walkway over the dam and follow the course of the river between towering sandstone cliffs to the base of a large waterfall. In some spots, you may be able to use ropes to climb. Depending on seasonal rainfall levels, the gorge may contain pools deep enough for swimming. It's an ideal walk to take slowly and enjoy the cool water and shade, especially in the heat of the summer. Transfer back to your hotel in the Dead Sea. (This service is on a private basis.)
The Dead Sea – bordering Israel, the West Bank and Jordan – is a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously vibrant blue and hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts. The extreme salinity of the water comes from the high evaporation rate. This salinity makes for an almost intolerable environment most living organisms.
Although your adventure must come to an end today, you will be leaving with new friends, amazing experiences and memories to cherish for the rest of your life. Once you have checked out of your hotel in the Dead Sea, you will be met by your driver and transferred to the Amman airport in good time to board your international departure flight.
We wish you safe and happy travels home! (This service is on a private basis.)
