As Middle Eastern cities go, Amman is a relative youth, being mostly a creation of the 20th century. But though it lacks the storied history and thrilling architectural tapestry of other regional capitals, there’s plenty here to encourage you to linger awhile before making for Petra, the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum. In fact, Amman is one of the easiest cities in which to enjoy the Middle East experience.
Depart Amman this morning to visit the Greco-Roman City of Jerash, also known as the City of the thousand columns. Jerash showcases the grandeur of Imperial Rome (and is sometimes referred to as the Pompeii of the East). It is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the World outside Italy. As the most pristine Decapolis City (meaning ten cities in Greek) in the modern world, Jerash’s prosperity can be admired in the colonnaded main street and lovely Oval Piazza. Visit the town of Ajlun with its fortress, one of the best-preserved examples of medieval Arab military architecture in the entire Middle East, which was once governed by Saladin. Enjoy the magnificent view of the Jordan Valley. Proceed to visit Um Qais, a city vibrant with black basalt ruins of the Hellenistic era in which it was known as Gadara, a hilltop site in the north-west corner of Jordan with grand views of the Golan Heights and Lake Tiberius (the Sea of Galilee). Um, Qais is also famous for being one of the ten cities that belonged to the Decapolis. Return to Amman later this afternoon and enjoy the evening at your leisure. (This service is on a private basis.)
Today, you will have a whole day to explore the King's highway, which was once part of the ancient Silk Road. Visit the Christian Town of Madaba, "The City of Mosaics." You will be visiting the St. George church with its mosaic map of the Holy Land from Byzantine times, and the Archaeological Park, which houses the remains of several Byzantine churches, including the amazing mosaics of the Church of the Virgin. The park complex includes a school for the restoration and conservation of ancient mosaics, and take a detour to visit the Monastery in Mount Nebo. Proceed via Wadi Al Mujib, a deep valley holding one of Jordan's most breathtaking views. We will continue our journey to the city of Kerak, where we will visit the Crusader's Castle, with its diverse history dated from the Byzantine to the Mamluk period, and get to know the architectural military brilliance of the Crusaders. Aftward, continue south to the Dana Nature Reserve, where you will enjoy dinner and settling in for your overnight at your hotel. (This service is on a private basis.)
After breakfast, enjoy a guided hiking tour in the Reserve. Dana Nature Reserve covers a system of wadis running down to Wadi Araba just north of Petra and is home to wildlife, jaw-dropping landscapes, and thousands of years of history. Best explored on foot; there are a series of trails that take in a variety of sights from canyon scenery to local villages and ancient copper mines (self-guided village tour).
Enjoy the afternoon as you'd like, and dinner will be served at your hotel this evening. (This service is on a private basis.)
Today, hike the Nawatef Trail (approximately 2 hours). The natural beauty of the Nawatef area, the Nabatean settlement, and the contrasting landscapes ensure there is something on this hike that will appeal to everyone.
In the afternoon, continue to Shobak Castle en route to Petra. (This service is on a private basis.)
Today, you will enjoy a full day of exploring the magnificently mysterious, rock-carved rose-red city of Petra. Shrouded in mystery, the ancient city was founded by the Nabateans 2000 years ago. Its massive architectural structure and its multicolored stones are an incredible attraction.
The visit of the ancient Nabatean capital starts on horseback or camel, followed by a walk through the Siq, a long narrow fissure between two overhanging cliffs. Towards the end of the Siq, you will be spellbound by Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury. (This service is on a private basis.)
Enjoy another full day exploration in the red city with your second entry and visit to Petra. (This service is on a private basis.)
After breakfast, you will leave Petra and head to the enchanting desert of Wadi Rum. Along the way, stop at Beida, also known as Little Petra, and the place where the Nabateans used to entertain their guests. Enjoy some time to get lost in the hidden nooks of Beida before you continue South to Wadi Rum, Jordan's largest desert and one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world.
Enjoy the desert adventure by 4WD through the best and most beautiful areas of Wadi Rum. Once you have arrived at the camp, enjoy a typical Bedouin dinner before enjoying a guided stargazing experience this evening. (This service is on a private basis.)
Located in the South of Jordan close to Aqaba and Petra this phenomenal desert wilderness with Red and White sand is Unesco World Heritage listed for both cultural and natural importance - 1 of only 27 sites in the world that is listed in this mixed category. Wadi Rum features the striking desert landscape consisting of a range of narrow gorges, natural arches, towering cliffs, ramps, massive landslides and caverns. Petroglyphs, inscriptions and archaeological remains in the site testify to 12,000 years of human occupation and interaction with the natural environment. Wadi Rum has been used as the backdrop to film several movies including: Lawrence of Arabia, Transformers and Prometheus.
After your unforgettable stay among the dramatic wilderness of the Wadi Rum Desert, you will pack up and continue your journey to the nearby city of Aqaba, where you can enjoy the afternoon at the Beach! (This service is on a private basis.)
After an exciting nine days of touring, hiking, and exploring, it's time to enjoy a bit of well-deserved R&R! Those interested in scuba diving or snorkeling can enjoy the sport at one of the world's most conserved coral reefs. There are many local diving operators in the vicinity, and your hotel can always help arrange this for you.
This morning your journey will continue to the Dead Sea en route you will visit Bethany, the site of John the Baptist's settlement where it is believed that Jesus was baptized. Continue to your hotel at the Dead Sea this evening and perhaps enjoy a soak in the Dead Sea after a day of travel. (This service is on a private basis.)
The Dead Sea – bordering Israel, the West Bank and Jordan – is a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously vibrant blue and hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts. The extreme salinity of the water comes from the high evaporation rate. This salinity makes for an almost intolerable environment most living organisms.
Today you will head to the Mujib Nature Reserve for a guided 3 to 4-hour hike along the Siq Trail. There are several hiking trails in Wadi Mujib, of which the Siq Trail is the shortest and most popular. Especially in the summer months, this is an ideal way to cool off. The water is refreshing, and most of the hike you walk in the shade. You could say that the Siq Trail is a natural theme park in Jordan's mountains.
After your day of exploration, you will continue your transfer to the Dead Sea. (This service is on a private basis.)
This morning you will depart from the Dead Sea and head back to Amman for one last tour. You will visit Amman's Roman Theatre, a 6,000-seat, 2nd-century Roman theatre. It is a famous landmark in the Jordanian capital that dates back to the Roman period when the city was known as Philadelphia. Next, you will see the Amman Citadel. This is a historical site at the center of downtown Amman, Jordan. Known in Arabic as Jabal al-Qa'ida, the L-shaped hill is one of the seven jabals that originally made up Amman. The last part of your tour will consist of visits to the Archaeological and Folklore Museums. Afterward, you will have the time to walk and shop around the old downtown area of the city.
Sadly, your journey through the highlights and hidden treasures of Jordan must come to an end today. However, you will be leaving with beautiful memories and quality experiences together! After checking out of your hotel, you will be transferred to the airport in good time for your departure flight. (This service is on a private basis.)
We hope you had a fantastic trip, and we wish you safe and pleasant travels onward!
