After a short ferry ride back to the mainland, we have a 2.5-hour drive to Croatia’s Lika region, where we’ll visit the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features a gorgeous series of lakes and waterfalls in enchanting shades of blue and green. Your guide will take you on a 5-6 hour long park visit, where you’ll have the chance to walk along Plitvice’s footpaths and wooden bridges and take a short boat ride on one of the lakes.
Surrounded by dense, verdant forests, this national park contains a series of huge lakes, caves and waterfalls. The karst landscapes that form the park create natural dams and filter the natural springs, creating fascinating waterfalls of clear blue water. There are a total of sixteen interconnected lakes between Mala Kapela and Pljesevica Mountain. Nearly 20 km of wooden bridges make getting around the park easy. E-bikes are available by request and make Istria's hilly terrain more manageable, though mountain bikes are an option as well for an extra challenge. Our route features winding country roads with views of olive groves, vineyards, hilltop towns, forests, and meadows. We’ll take a break in the town of Grožnjan, where you can have lunch or coffee on your own if you’d like. Known as the town of artists, this charming village is famous for its art galleries and jazz festival. After the break, we’ll cycle part of the Parenzana, an old railroad bed featuring a series of scenic bridges and tunnels as it winds its way back down to the valley. Today you’ll bid farewell to Croatia and will explore Slovenia’s fascinating karst landscape. We’ll start with a visit to Skocjan Caves (1-hour drive from Motovun), a large cave system that looks like something out of Lord of the Rings. Over the course of a 3-hour walk, you’ll get to see impressive pillars, stalactites and stalagmites, an underground river and waterfalls, and a huge cavern measuring nearly 500 feet from top to bottom.
After the cave visit, we’ll continue to Piran (45-minute drive). Once we arrive, you’ll have a chance to get settled into your hotel and will have free time - you can explore the town and take in its Venetian Gothic architecture or spend some time at the beach and go for a swim in the Adriatic. We’ll meet in the evening for a farewell dinner.
