Botswana is a unique African destination: an unusual combination of desert and delta that draws an immense concentration of wildlife to its complex of wetlands in the winter and a dazzling array of birdlife during the summer. It is also wild, pristine and expansive. Thirty-nine percent of the country is protected in some form or another, including almost the entire northern third of the country, and its national parks and reserves provide a safe haven for some 85 species of mammal and over 1,075 species of bird. It is the ultimate Safari Destination. The highest density of elephants in the Chobe National Park, beautiful landscapes, Game Reserves, and home of one of the world's natural 7 wonders, Victoria Falls. Please note that this safari program has set departures, please ask your agent for dates that might work best for you.
You will be met on arrival at Maun Airport and transferred by light aircraft to Oddball´s Enclave where you will stay for two nights.
Oddball’s Enclave is situated on the edge of Chief’s Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta and offers arguably the purest traditional Okavango Delta experience. This small intimate hideaway with spectacular views over the floodplain can accommodate a maximum of ten guests in five Meru style tents with rustic en-suite bathrooms, each individually built on a wooden platform and shaded by reed shelters. The bar and lounge areas have comfortable seating and a raised viewing deck overlooks the sweep of the delta – the perfect place to watch the sun rise over the floodplain and view whatever wildlife may be visiting.
Enjoy another day at Oddball's Enclave in the Okavango Delta.
The activities at Oddball’s Enclave usually start by mokoro, after which you will walk on some of the larger islands in the area. Walking is an integral and significant part of the experience at any time of year. The extent of the walks will depend on your tastes. Some guests elect to go out for the whole day with a packed picnic lunch. It is often said that the very best way to experience the wonders of the African bush is on foot and Oddballs’ Enclave certainly lives up to that claim.
After the morning activity (time permitting) and breakfast, you will be flown to Khwai Airstrip where you will meet your bushways guide and continue for your fully-serviced safari for six nights.
The Fully Serviced Safari is a non participation safari, where the Bush Ways team will carry out all the necessary camp chores to keep the safari running smoothly. The tents are large (3mx3m) canvas dome tents with camp beds and bedding provided. Each tent has an ensuite bush toilet and shower. The maximum number of guests per vehicle is 9 ensuring that everyone gets a window seat. All soft drinks, mineral water and local alcohols are included.
The two days in the Khwai Community Area will be spent searching for the wide variety of wildlife and birds that this area is renowned for, while absorbing the sounds and beauty of this region.
Enjoy another day exploring the Moremi Game Reserve.
A mokoro excursion will take you along a channel of the Khwai River to view game from another perspective and to experience this tranquil mode of transport. Game drives in the early morning as the sun rises and in the late afternoon as the sun sets will be the norm with half a day dedicated to exploring the Moremi Game Reserve.
Moremi Game Reserve is surrounded by wildlife management areas of the Okavango, with no boundaries between the concessions and the reserve allowing wildlife to move between the woodlands in the wet season when water is plentiful and back to permanent rivers and lagoons in the dry season. The prior inhabitants in the area (the River Bushmen) were moved to the periphery of the reserve, establishing Khwai village near the North Gate exit of the park. The Khwai area is managed by the community through the Khwai Development Trust. This area offers the same wildlife experience as the reserve itself. A key advantage of being outside the reserve is the freedom to do walking safaris and night drives as the area is not governed by the same rules.
Chobe National Park, with its diverse and striking landscapes, will be your next destination. As you continue your search for wildlife, you will traverse the drier region of Savuti where bull elephants dot the plains. Savuti is very well known for its predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and even African wild dog. The Savuti Channel has started flowing again after being dry for the last 30 years.
The arrival of water is changing the landscape as well as accommodating different species which historically have not been able to survive in the rather arid plains of Savuti. This exciting event has allowed large breeding herds of elephant as well as buffalo to visit the area.
Today you will explore more of the Savuti area of the famous Chobe National Park.
The Savuti area offers a harsh and desert-like landscape in the dry season when the wildlife is supported by the now flowing Savuti channel. This contrasts dramatically with the rainy season where the seasonal pans fill with water and the Savuti Marsh and surrounds are covered with lush green vegetation that attracts an annual migration of zebra and wildebeest, as well as an abundance of birdlife.
Unlike the vast majority of the country, Savuti is not a totally flat landscape: large outcrops of volcanic rock reach up out of the Kalahari sands towering over the endless savannah. These hills provide a habitat for a completely different array of small wildlife, birds and plants. The sand ridge, Goha Hills, and the dead trees on the Savute Marsh, offer some spectacular photographic opportunities. The Savuti Marsh has been the stage for many of the most dramatic wildlife documentaries in Africa. The wide open country, good ungulate populations and particularly strong prides of lion and hyena clans make for dramatic wildlife interaction and excellent viewing opportunities. The marsh is prime cheetah country and it is not unusual to see wild dog hunting in the Savuti in the wet season.
Next, you will head northwards to the Chobe River where your game drives will meander along the banks of the river, punctuated by the call of the majestic African Fish Eagle.
The Chobe River Floodplain is an amazing game viewing area where water attracts large herds of buffalo, elephant, zebra and other herbivores. Due to the proliferation of prey, predators are likely to be close at hand. Sunsets in this region are always spectacular and allow for amazing photographic opportunities. While in Northern Chobe, you will be treated to a cruise on the Chobe River. This experience will allow you to get a closer look at the aquatic animals and birds not easily approached on safari.
Today will be spent game driving and spotting a wide array of spectacular animals along the river.
The Chobe River Front is a remarkable wildlife area due to the permanent water source of the Chobe River. The summer rains bring beautiful wild flowers, exquisite scenery, impressive birdlife and an abundance of young animals usually born around November/December. The spectacular Chobe sunsets alone are worth a visit to the area.
After an early morning activity, the mobile safari will end at 12:00 in Kasane (you can have lunch in Kasane before your transfer to Vic falls – at own expense) where you will be transferred by road to Ilala Lodge in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe where you will stay for two nights.
