Borneo Adventure Day 1

On arrival in Pangkalunbun, meet your guide and driver and transfer to the Kumai River Harbor to board a traditional klotok—a flat-bottomed riverboat. Cruise through this bustling river port, passing shipyards where Makassar schooners are handcrafted from tropical hardwoods. Continue the cruise upriver, through forests that provide habitat for many species of birds and monkeys. Experience the vibrant life along the riverfront—take in scenes of people scaling fish, washing babies, fishing, repairing boats and curious local children waving as you pass.

During your time here, you will visit the three ranger stations at Tanjung Puting National Park—the orangutan camp at Tanjung Haraphan, Camp Leakey and Pondok Tanggui. Here, you will more than likely encounter several of the resident ex-captive orangutans that roam within the grounds of the research camp. There will be multiple opportunities to see orangutan feedings at various sites. When your guide calls out the whooping sound to announce the feeding, you will begin to hear the rustle of leaves and then experience the heart-pounding moment when these great apes swing toward you.

After checking in at your lodge, if time permits, depart by boat to the Tanjung Haraphan and hike to the feeding platform for your first chance to view these beautiful creatures in the wild.

Return back to the boat and continue on to observe and learn more about proboscis monkeys along the river banks. Proboscis monkeys are endemic and can only be seen in Borneo.

Daily Summary

Borneo Adventure Day 2

Start each day bright and early with your guide to be on the river at prime wildlife viewing times. See playful proboscis monkeys bounding through the trees. These large primates, whose pendulous noses give them a comic appearance, are found only in isolated areas of Borneo. See majestic hornbills flying low over the jungle canopy, leaf-eating macaques and the occasional wild orangutan. A river journey in Borneo is a travel classic, mysterious and wondrous—at times the river narrows to the point that passage may seem to be in doubt.

This morning, visit Camp Leakey, founded in 1971 by Dr. Birute Galdikas for the study and conservation of orangutans. Like Jane Goodall's work with chimpanzees and Dian Fossey's with gorillas, Dr. Galdikas' hands-on approach to researching orangutans—she has lived for decades in this jungle—has resulted in a profoundly influential body of work.

This afternoon, hike to the Pondok Tanggui feeding platform. If interested, take a nighttime river cruise to see the fireflies along the river.

Goa Gajah, Tirta Empul & Monkey Forest

This morning, meet your guide and start the day with visits to a few of Bali's most sacred temples and religious sites. Start at the mysterious Goa Gajah, or Elephant Cave, a fantastically carved cave. From there, a short walk along rice fields and through a small village takes you to the 14th-century reliefs of Yeh Pulu, carved out of the rock hillside.

You will continue your trip excursion with Tirta Empul. This rectangular pool carved of stone, filled with koi fish and fed by the sacred spring via 12 fountains, is a sacred place for purification ceremonies. Here, you can make an offering for your best wishes. Don't forget to bring a bathing suit and a sarong for this part of the day!

After Tirta Empul, you will be driven to the sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The Monkey Forest is located in the center of Ubud and is a fun place to explore. Just be aware that the monkeys can be quite naughty! This site has become very popular, so if you want to avoid the tourists, you can alternatively head in to town and just enjoy walking around some great little boutique shops. Depart to the port to start your 3 Days 2 nights cruise program with Jofiel Phinisi. The captain makes the necessary arrangements for obtaining permission to sail the boat, this effort may take a few minutes of waiting in the port of Labuan Bajo.

We begin our navigation before stopping at one of the pristine beaches that are found in these waters for snorkeling. Some of these sandy beaches are made of coral remnants of red and white. The Komodo National Park is known for its rich marine life and is certainly one of the best places in the world for scuba diving and snorkeling. Visit the village of Rinca. Its inhabitants are mostly an ethnic minority group of Indonesia. This town known as sea gypsies has maintained its tradition of semi-nomadic sea life with small boats plying the waters of the Indonesian archipelago.

Overnight on board the boat off the island of Kalong or flying foxes (flying fox island). Every evening at 6PM thousands of fruit bats reach nearly two feet out in search of their food to the nearby island of Flores. Moor off the island to see the magnificent spectacle flying over our heads these flying mammals. Spend the night on the boat in one of the fully equipped private cabins or, if you prefer, on the deck under the stars.
