Itinerary Detail

Day 1: Colombo Arrival

Colombo
Daily Summary
  • Transportation: Airport Transfer
  • Tour: Colombo Street Food
  • Accommodation: Galle Face Hotel
  • Meals: D

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon arrival at the airport in Colombo, clear immigration and customs before proceeding to the arrivals lobby area. You will be met by your private chauffeur guide and transferred to your hotel in Colombo.

Colombo Street Food

This evening you will meet an insider from Colombo who will take you on a journey in search of the flavors which makes Colombo what it is; a melting pot of different cultures.

While Sri Lanka is a multi-cultural country, there is no better sample slice of it than the Colombo City where there is almost an equal split of different ethnicities, each carrying their own specialties of food and cooking cultures which has come down from generations. As you go along you will realize how food can be a great form of insight into the socio-cultural facets and history of a country.

From the South Indian influenced dishes of the Tamils such as vadai, dosai and appam (a.k.a. hoppers), the specialties of the Muslims such as samosas, biryani or even a cup of watalappan for dessert, the isso vadais and kottu roti which are quintessentially Sri Lankan to a cup of plain tea to wrap things up with a bit of the colonial influence, each specialty dish that you try out will have a story of its own from the past. But don’t get it wrong, this is not a history lesson with a little bit of eating but pretty much the opposite - A lot of eating with a little bit of looking back at history!

Note: The best part is that there is no set script for this experience since scripts are not for explorers. So before flying into Sri Lanka, please let us know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions and if there are any particular dishes that you would like to try and your host will try the best to accommodate all or some of your wishes. Come prepared to eat with your fingers as we share the food portions. (This service is on a private basis.)

Colombo

Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has a long history as a port on ancient east-west trade routes, ruled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and British. That heritage is reflected in its its architecture, mixing colonial buildings with high-rises and shopping malls. The imposing Colombo National Museum, dedicated to Sri Lankan history, borders sprawling Viharamahadevi Park and its giant Buddha.

Day 2: Colombo - Sigiriya

Colombo - Sigiriya
Daily Summary

Today you'll bid farewell to Colombo and proceed towards Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, approximately 4.5 hours drive. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel and settle into your new surroundings! (This service is on a private basis.)

Pidurangala Sunset Hike

Later in the afternoon, climb a massive rock formation that the ancient Sri Lankans named Pidurangala. If you are lucky, you will be able to witness a stunning sunset from the top.

This is said to be the royal temple at the time when King Kashyapa was at the helm. Be prepared to climb, the hike takes about one hour depending on fitness – the last part is a bit tricky over rocks but it can be done with care. It is all worth it once you reach the top and are rewarded with views of a green carpet of forest punctuated with Sigiriya rock in the distance. Breathe in the fresh air, you are on top of a magical place. If you want to be in peace and avoid the tour buses, this is the place to be. (This service is on a private basis.)

Sigiriya

Centered on a massive rock rising 200 meters above the surrounding plain, Sigiriya’s location is one of considerable natural beauty and historical interest. An area of ancient settlement lying between the historic capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the Sigiriya plain still retains much of its forest cover, and many of its present village settlements and man-made village reservoirs date back to the first millennium B.C. In its present form, Sigiriya itself is essentially a walled-and-moated royal capital of the fifth century A.D. It has a palace complex on top of the rock, elaborate pleasure gardens, extensive moats and ramparts, and well-known paintings on the western face of the rock.

Day 3: Sigiriya

Sigiriya
Daily Summary

Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Jeep Safari

Rise and shine! Early this morning, you will have a chance to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya, the marvelous rock fortress also known as Lion Rock, is a rare jewel among the many treasures in Sri Lanka. The site was the domain of King Kashyapa whose aim was to build an impregnable fortress, and within it, a heavenly abode. Rising over the dry plains of the Sigiriya District, the climb of 1,200 steps up this plateau ends with the most scenic bird’s-eye view of the emerald plains and leafy villages beneath. The skeletal layout of the ancient city within the fortress marvels its observers with the grandeur and complexity of Sri Lanka's 5th-century urban-planning.

On the way to the top one can observe the famous Sigiriya frescoes of the buxom, wasp-waisted maidens bearing flowers, amidst the wilderness and ancient ruins. The smoothly glazed ‘Mirror Wall’ located a few steps away has sealed the expressions of ancient visitors, inspired by the vibrant frescoes. The Sigiriya experience takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the pace at which you wish to ascend.

*Tip: Suggest you reach here early around 7am in order to avoid the large crowds of tourists
which comes in later as well as the heat of the day. It makes the climb easier with the pleasant
climate and this is the best time for photographs.*

Later in the afternoon, set out on a jeep safari at either of Minneriya, Hurulu Eco Park, or Kaudulla National Parks. All of these national parks located close by are famous for observing Elephants in their natural habitat.

The elephants in the area keep on transferring from one park to another depending on the time periods of the year according to the availability of food and water and hence the ideal National Park to visit would depend on the Elephant herds’ movements at the particular time period. Apart from the jumbos, Minneriya and Kaudulla at times present sightings of bird-flocks such as painted storks, pelicans, and little cormorants, which comes as a bonus. Although it can be crowded with jeeps at times, encountering these giants in their numbers at close range would definitely be an unforgettable experience. (This service is on a private basis.)

Day 4: Sigiriya - Matale - Kandy

Sigiriya - Matale - Kandy
Daily Summary
  • Tour: Matale Hidden Village
  • Accommodation: Ru Boutique
  • Meals: B, L

Matale Hidden Village

After enjoying breakfast, start driving towards Matale and set out on a walk exploring a hidden inner village of Matale. The guidebooks will probably feature Matale for the (in)famous spice gardens. But that is for the people who like to read and fall into tourist traps. Since that’s not what we are after, let’s throw away the guidebooks and join a villager who will take us through his village, hidden away from the main roads and where real life happens. Imagine walking through paddy fields with the villagers going about their daily faming activities, stunning views with the Knuckles mountain range in the distance, a river flowing through the village with a gentle breeze cooling you off, birds chirping away as you walk along, the aromas of natural spice trees such as pepper, cinnamon, cloves, and coffee. Yes, it sounds unreal but good things do happen to those who wander off the beaten path.

As you slowly walk along while listening to the stories and folklore of the village guide, take a minute to breath in the fresh air and be thankful that such luxuries still exist. This easy walk goes for about 3-4 KMs and the duration will be around 1-2 hours depending on the pace you want to do it.

At the end of the walk, you will get to see and experience how coconut sambol is made after which you will be treated with a feast like rice and curry lunch, served in the traditional style on a lotus/banana leaf and it’s all you can eat! A few traditional sweets will be served for dessert.

*Notes: Apart from the village guide, your main tour guide will also accompany you on the walk to help out with translations where necessary. To reduce the carbon footprint, this walk will be done without a backup vehicle which can be arranged if necessary.*

After the visit, you will head on over to Kandy, the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings (total driving duration: approximately 3 hours). (This service is on a private basis.)

Kandy

Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. It's set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest. The city's heart is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is popular for strolling. Kandy is famed for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession.

Day 5: Kandy

Kandy
Daily Summary
  • Tour: Curries, Clay Pots, & Kandyan Flavors
  • Tour: Kandy City Tour
  • Accommodation: Ru Boutique
  • Meals: B, L

Curries, Clay Pots, & Kandyan Flavors

You are in for a yummy treat today! You will visit a local home not too far from the city of Kandy and enjoy a home-cooked meal soaked in tropical spices and rich Kandyan flavors. Krishanthi, the lady of the house, is an amazing host and more than happy to welcome you and share her age-old secret recipes as she takes you on a culinary journey. You will be welcomed with warm Kandyan smiles and a glass of fresh tropical fruit juice. Begin with a quick visit to the local vegetable stall where you can pick any vegetables you like and return with a bag full of goodies needed for your meal. Krishanthi's kitchen is equipped with a traditional firewood stove and a 'miris gala' which is an ancient stone grinder. These are rather rare to come by in an ordinary home in this modern day. You will be cooking in clay pots as there is no better way to cook a nice curry! After an eventful few hours in the kitchen, sit down for a mouthwatering lunch. Not only will you learn about the local cuisine today but you will also get a glimpse into the life and home of a local family. (This service is on a private basis.)

Kandy City Tour

In the afternoon, explore the town of Kandy, a city which belongs to the fabric of legends. While Sri Lanka was under Portuguese and Dutch rule the Kings of Kandy remained defiant and independent. It was much later during the British rule that Kandy finally fell to the biggest Empire in the world.

Today Kandy is a big city that still retains touches of its colonial history in buildings such as the Queen's hotel, a beautiful 19th century neoclassical beauty. Wander around the lake and the streets of Kandy getting a feel for this wonderful city and explore the local markets.

We think that markets are the heart and soul of a place, after all that is where the locals shop! Take a look at the wonderful vendors inside the Kandy town market. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, pepper, and turmeric; these names not only make us think of delicious food but also relate to the age of discovery and to 500 turbulent years in the history of Ceylon under Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. In addition to spices, the vendors also sell a range of seasonal fruits which are a must try.

Later visit the Temple of the Tooth which is no doubt the city’s biggest pride. Located at the heart of Kandy town, the Temple of the Tooth relic is the most iconic building of the city and one could also call it the center of attraction the whole city revolves around. Back in the days of the kings, custodianship of the Sacred tooth relic symbolized the right to rule the island and it was the responsibility of the kings to safeguard it. Fast forward a few decades, it is still a revered place in the hearts of all Buddhists living in the country. (This service is on a private basis.)
